How To Maintain Your Brick Wall Over The Years

Drive around your town, and you will probably see a good number of brick walls being used decoratively, as fences, or even as parts of buildings. Some of them will be in great condition, whereas others may be basically crumbling. What's the difference? Why do some brick walls look great for decades, whereas others start looking a wreck after just a few years? It mostly comes down to maintenance. Here are some ways to provide your brick walls with the best care so they continue to look great for years to come.

Clean With Bleach

Moss and algae love to grow on the porous surfaces of bricks. However, in doing so, they cause the brick to break down and weaken. To keep moss and algae growth at bay, wipe the brick down with bleach and water every couple of months. It's best to do this in the spring and fall when moss and algae are at their most prevalent. Use about a cup of bleach per gallon of water.

Keep Weeds Trimmed Back

It's actually important for the brick wall to get some sun, as the sun dries it out and keeps it from deteriorating so quickly. Weeds growing too close to the brick wall cast shade on the wall and keep it too moist. Make sure you trim back weeds regularly. Consider scattering weed killer granules along the wall each spring so the weeds don't even grow in the first place.

Avoid Harsh Scrubbing

Whether you're cleaning the wall with bleach or just hosing off some grass trimmings, remember to be gentle. Never scrub the wall aggressively or aim the hose directly at the mortar. You don't want to disturb any mortar that is already a bit loose since this can cause water to penetrate further between the bricks, leading to more damage.

Repoint the Wall

Every five years or so, hire a brickwork company to repoint the wall. Repointing is a process by which a mason will chip the surface-level mortar out from between the bricks and replace it with new mortar. By replacing this outer mortar every five years, you'll keep the rest of the mortar in better shape and help keep the wall looking fresher.

If you follow the tips above, your brick wall should stay in great shape over the years. Contact a company that offers brick work services in your area to learn more.
